What do we wear?!?

I adore the show “What Not To Wear” on TLC. It is one of those shows that I can’t watch, even for 5 minutes, without getting totally sucked into. If I see the person’s intro, I can NOT turn the channel. I just have to see how Stacy and Clinton work their magic on the next unsuspecting victim!

So, I began thinking that I would love to do a “What TO Wear…” series on my blog. One of the most frequent questions I get when collaborating with families before their session to is, “What should we wear…?”. I hope that these posts – which I hope to do every month or so – will help answer some of those questions and give some different ideas about what works best when photographing families.

Some important tips when selecting outfits for your session:
* It is best to not be matchy-matchy (all whites, all black, etc.), but coordinating. It makes the pictures more interesting and gives them more depth.
* Put one person in a pattern and then decide what everyone else is going to wear based on that outfit. For example, when designing this WTW storyboard, I picked the little girl’s dress first (which is currently sitting in a shopping cart waiting for me to go grab my credit card so I can buy it for my little one…these blog posts may end up being a bad thing on my wallet. Ha!) and then the mom’s outfit, followed by dad and brothers.
* It is okay to mix and match dressy with casual. For example, mom’s shoes below are quite dressy, however, dad and brother are in flip-flops. Personally, I think this is absolutely fine. Don’t feel like everyone has to look like they are heading out to an Easter Sunday service if you throw in something dressier for one person. It is okay to mix and match.

Spring Outfits

For this post, all items, except the mom’s shoes, came off of the Old Navy website last night…so, my last tip is DO NOT feel like you have to spend hundreds of dollars preparing for your portraits. There are a ton of budget friendly options out there…and, if you get stuck, just let me know. I’m more than happy to help!
